After months of rain, closed windows and muddy shoes, spring is the right time to clean the places you skip the rest of the year. Break it into small jobs so it does not feel overwhelming.

Plan it

• One area at a time. Pick one room or task each day for a week or two instead of doing it all in one weekend.
• Declutter first. Donate or recycle what you no longer use before you clean. Less stuff means less to clean.
• Work top to bottom. Ceilings, light fixtures and fans first, floors last.

The spring list

• Windows and sills. Wash windows inside, wipe sills and vacuum tracks. Check for mildew from winter condensation.
• Baseboards and doors. Wipe baseboards, door frames and light switches.
• Vents and fans. Vacuum air vents and wipe ceiling fan blades.
• Curtains and blinds. Wash curtains according to the label and dust blinds.
• Under and behind furniture. Move sofas and beds to vacuum underneath.

Outside the main rooms

• Entry and mudroom. Clean winter boots and coats and put them away. Wash doormats.
• Patio and deck furniture. Wash outdoor furniture and cushions before the warm weather.
• Change filters. Replace the HVAC filter as the seasons change.
