Clean white kitchen with hardwood floors

The kitchen gets dirty faster than any other room. Cleaning a little after every meal and doing a deeper clean every few weeks keeps grease and grime from building up.

Counters and surfaces

  • Know your stone. Granite, marble and quartz should not be cleaned with vinegar, lemon or other acids. Use mild dish soap and warm water or a cleaner made for stone.
  • Clear before you wipe. Move small appliances and wipe underneath them. Crumbs collect behind toasters and coffee makers.
  • Cabinet fronts and handles. Wipe them with warm, soapy water every couple of weeks. Grease from cooking settles on them.

Appliances

  • Stainless steel. Wipe in the direction of the grain with a damp microfiber cloth, then dry it to avoid streaks.
  • Microwave. Heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for a few minutes, then wipe. The steam loosens splatters.
  • Refrigerator. Throw out old food weekly, before grocery day. Wipe shelves with warm, soapy water every month.
  • Oven and range hood. Wipe spills once the oven is cool. Soak range hood filters in hot water and dish soap every few months.

Sink and floors

  • Clean the sink daily. Scrub with dish soap or baking soda and rinse. Clean the faucet base and drain stopper too.
  • Freshen the drain. Run hot water after washing dishes. Never pour grease down the drain.
  • Mop last. Sweep, then mop after the counters and appliances are done.

Quick checklist

  • Wash or load dishes after each meal
  • Wipe counters and stovetop
  • Clean the sink
  • Take out the trash
  • Sweep the floor

Rather leave it to a professional?

A deep clean covers cabinet fronts, the microwave, the range hood and built-up grease. Move-out cleaning adds the inside of the oven, fridge and cabinets.
