Made bed in a clean bedroom

Bedrooms gather dust from fabric, skin and pets. Clean bedding and less clutter make the biggest difference in how the room looks and feels.

Bedding

  • Wash sheets every week or two. More often if pets sleep on the bed or someone has allergies.
  • Wash pillows a few times a year. Many pillows can go in the washer. Check the label and dry them completely.
  • Use a mattress protector. It is much easier to wash a protector than to clean a mattress.
  • Air out the bed. Pull the covers back for a while in the morning before making the bed.

The mattress

  • Vacuum it. Use the upholstery attachment every few months, including the sides.
  • Freshen it. Sprinkle baking soda, leave it for an hour, then vacuum it up.
  • Rotate it. Follow the manufacturer’s advice on rotating or flipping so it wears evenly.

Surfaces, floors and closets

  • Dust nightstands and dressers weekly. Clear them first so you can wipe the whole surface.
  • Under the bed. Vacuum under the bed at least once a month. Dust collects quickly where you cannot see it.
  • Closets. Put away clothes daily and donate what you no longer wear each season.
  • Windows and blinds. Wipe blinds and window sills monthly. Condensation on Seattle windows in winter can leave sills damp, so dry them often.

Quick checklist

  • Make the bed
  • Put clothes away or in the hamper
  • Clear the nightstand
  • Dust surfaces
  • Vacuum, including under the bed
