Tidy bedroom

A kid’s room stays tidier when everything has an easy place to go. Simple storage and a short daily routine work better than a big weekly cleanup.

Make tidying easy

  • Open bins. Children put toys away more often when bins have no lids and are at their height.
  • Label with pictures. For younger kids, a picture of blocks or books on each bin shows where things go.
  • Rotate toys. Keep some toys in storage and swap them every few weeks. Fewer toys out means less mess.
  • A five-minute pickup. Set a timer before bedtime and make tidying a race.

Clean toys and surfaces

  • Plastic toys. Wash in warm, soapy water and let them air dry. Some can go on the top rack of the dishwasher. Check the label.
  • Stuffed animals. Many can be washed in a pillowcase on a gentle cycle. Check the tag first.
  • Use child-safe products. Choose mild cleaners for surfaces children touch, and store all products out of reach.

Chores by age

  • Ages 2 to 4. Put toys in bins, put books on a low shelf, put dirty clothes in the hamper.
  • Ages 5 to 7. Make the bed, put away clean clothes, dust low surfaces.
  • Ages 8 and up. Vacuum their room, change their sheets with help, keep their desk clear.

Quick checklist

  • Toys back in bins
  • Clothes in the hamper
  • Books on the shelf
  • Make the bed
  • Clear the floor for vacuuming
