Kitchen ready for holiday cooking

Guests notice the entry, the guest bathroom, the kitchen and where they sit. Focus your time there and follow a simple timeline so nothing is left for the last minute.

One week before

  • Clean out the fridge. Make room for holiday food and throw out anything old.
  • Deep clean the oven. Do it early, since a self-cleaning cycle can create smoke and odors.
  • Wash guest bedding. Wash and put on fresh sheets and lay out clean towels.

Two or three days before

  • Guest bathroom. Clean the toilet, sink, mirror and floor. Add extra toilet paper, soap and hand towels.
  • Living and dining areas. Dust, vacuum and wipe the table and chairs.
  • Entry. Clean the front door, sweep the porch and put out a good doormat for wet shoes.

The day of and after

  • Empty the dishwasher and trash. Start the party with an empty dishwasher and empty trash cans.
  • Set up a cleanup station. Put out a container for scraps and a spot for dirty dishes.
  • Handle spills right away. Blot wine and sauce spills on rugs and fabric before they set.
  • Next morning. Wash dishes, wipe counters, vacuum and take out recycling.

Quick checklist
