The best time to clean a new home is before you move in. Empty rooms are faster to clean, and you can reach the inside of every cabinet and closet.

Plan it

• Schedule the clean between closing and moving day. One or two days before the movers come is ideal.
• Start with the kitchen and bathrooms. These are the rooms you will use first.
• Bring basics. Pack a box with cleaning supplies, paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper and soap so you have them on day one.

What to clean

• Inside cabinets and drawers. Vacuum crumbs, then wipe with warm, soapy water before lining or filling them.
• Appliances. Clean inside the fridge, oven, microwave and dishwasher.
• Bathrooms. Scrub and disinfect the toilet, shower, tub and sink. Replace the shower curtain liner.
• Closets and shelves. Dust and wipe shelves and rods before hanging clothes.
• Floors last. Vacuum and mop after everything else is clean.

After moving in

• Change filters. Replace the HVAC filter, and clean the range hood filter and the dryer lint trap.
• Check smoke detectors. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your new home.
• Note anything broken. Write down damage or problems you find while cleaning, especially if you rent.
