Living Room Cleaning Tips
Keep the room where your family spends the most time fresh, dust-free and ready for guests.

The living room collects dust, crumbs and clutter faster than most rooms because everyone uses it. A short weekly routine and a deeper monthly pass keep it under control.
Dust the right way
- Start high. Ceiling fans, light fixtures and the tops of shelves first, then tables and TV stands.
- Electronics. Turn screens off and wipe them with a dry microfiber cloth. Do not spray liquid directly on a TV or monitor.
- Lamps and shades. Use a lint roller or the vacuum brush attachment on fabric lampshades.
- Remote controls. Wipe buttons with a cloth lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol. They are some of the most touched items in the house.
Sofas and upholstery
- Vacuum weekly. Remove cushions and vacuum the crevices where crumbs and pet hair collect.
- Check the care tag. Codes such as W (water), S (solvent) or X (vacuum only) tell you how a fabric can be cleaned.
- Blot spills. Blot from the outside in. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and spreads it.
- Flip and rotate cushions. They wear more evenly and keep their shape longer.
Floors and rugs
- Vacuum rugs in two directions. Going over the rug lengthwise and then across lifts more dirt from the fibers.
- Hardwood needs little water. Use a damp, well-wrung mop or a cleaner made for wood. Standing water can damage the finish.
- Use doormats. A mat outside and inside the door stops much of the dirt that ends up on living room floors, especially in the rainy season.
Quick checklist
- Fold blankets and fluff pillows
- Clear the coffee table
- Dust surfaces and electronics
- Vacuum sofa crevices
- Vacuum or mop the floor
